How do I cook hot cereals

The traditional way to cook most of these cereals is in a double boiler.  Here are a few basic recipes.

OATMEAL/RYE FLAKES/WHEAT FLAKES/BARLEY FLAKES

1/4 C. Cereal flakes
1 C. Boiling Water
1/2 t. Salt (Optional)

Sprinkle cereal into rapidly boiling water.  Boil rapidly, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes.  Add salt and serve.

Serve with milk or cream, add brown sugar or cane juice crystals, add raisins or other fruits; add a pinch of cinnamon.

CREAM OF WHEAT/CREAM OF RICE/MULTI-GRAIN CEREAL

1/4 c. cereal
1 1/4 c boiling water
1/4 t. salt (optional)

Sprinkle cereal, stirring constantly, into rapidly boiling water with salt added.  Boil 5 min.  Continue cooking over hot water in double boiler for 30 min. Serve hot.

Add a few chopped dates or raisins, some chopped nuts, or substitute fruit juice for water for a real treat.

CRACKED WHEAT/STEEL-CUT OATS

1/2 c. cereal
2 c. boiling water
1/2 t. salt

Sprinkle cereal into rapidly boiling water.  Add salt.  Boil 5 minutes, stirring frequently.  Cook in double boiler over hot water for 4-6 hours.  Or place in crock-pot on low and cook overnight.
